Understanding EV Charging: AC vs DC Explained
February 22, 2026 • 1 min read
One of the most common questions new EV owners have is about the difference between AC and DC charging. Let us break it down simply.
AC Charging (Level 1 & Level 2)
AC charging uses your car's onboard charger to convert alternating current from the grid to direct current that your battery needs. It is slower but widely available and perfect for overnight charging.
DC Fast Charging (Level 3)
DC fast charging bypasses your car's onboard charger and delivers direct current straight to your battery. This is much faster, going from 10% to 80% in 30-60 minutes for most EVs.
Which Should You Use?
For daily driving, AC charging at home or work is the most convenient and cost-effective option. DC fast charging is best for long trips when you need a quick top-up.
